Minecraft is a sandbox, indie, video game inspired by an older game Infiniminer. Many of the players who use this game either on a PC (Personal Computer) or a Mac (Macintosh Computer). The words behind naming this game are made up of two separate words, Mine and Craft. “Mine” is the ability to extract more from the earth’s core and “craft’ is the skill to create new objects from raw material. Together, the game is believed to be very addictive and many players spend hours enjoying it at a stretch. The game is not very old and was in the beta phase in 2011. Since then the user base for the game has crossed 4.4 million buying users. The customers are known to increase by about a million and a half each quarter. Today, the Minecraft user base has reached more than 18 million registered customers from all over the world.

The Game was developed by a 30-year old Swedish Game Developer, Markus Persson. He was known as “Notch” in gaming spheres when he started making Minecraft around May 2009. The pre-orders for the game were being accepted till June 2009 when the game was still in Beta. Soon after the initial success, Markus started his company, Mojang AB. It was during the time that he hired Jens “Jeb” Bergensten, who became the “right-hand man” for design affairs. The game was officially launched by the end of November 2011.

In the game, the player creates and destroys various types of building blocks. Each block is made of a one metered cube in a 3D setting. The blocks can be in different kinds, such as grass, stone, and other ores. Players can create multiple items from the collected cubes to survive in the game. Blocks can yield resources which can be used to produce other material such as furnaces and crafting tables. The only block that can’t be penetrated is the bedrock which is used to build a barrier between Minecraft and the empty void. The players in this game can create their personalized avatars and can create or destroy blocks. They can also use these blocks to create imaginative structures and fantasy-based artwork. The players can create communities around the gameplay and can invite other players to online multiplayer servers too.

Multiplayer mode and other such means allow for creating randomly generated new worlds using mathematical algorithms and commands. The games consist of five levels, from peaceful to hardcore. Each player has a health bar with 10 heart and the health can decrease with every fall, suffocation, or even drowning. It can also reduce with fire and, lava, lightning, cacti, falling into the void, and being hit by hostile player avatars. Armor becomes a component of great use for the player. It helps save the health of the player and food is similarly beneficial in restoring health. In a peaceful setting, the health of the player regenerates itself. However, eating raw flesh and raw rotten chicken can poison the player. Each difficulty level has it’s own health variations and a low hunger level may deplete a player's life.

Minecraft has won multiple awards over the years from PC Gamer's Game of the year, 2010 Indie of the year, GDC’s Best Debut Game, Best Downloadable Game, the innovation award, and IGF’s Grand Prize and Audience Award. Minecraft stimulates conversations and has been a source for never-ending creativity among its fan base.
